(New Name Music) 2010

Reggae producer Castro Brown has discovered a potentially viable medium for Lovers Rock fans -- concert DVD films that reflect London's romantic-reggae subculture. Since 2004, London reggae promoters have created a loyal demographic of Lovers Rock concert fans -- a fan base that eventually supported an increase in album production during the second half of 2009 when this concert was held. As a result, this concert is the first visual representation of the Lovers Rock rebirth scene, the career revival of many UK reggae icons who enjoyed their greatest successes during the 1980s. This factor alone makes the DVD a must-have for Lovers Rock fans, and fortunately, the musical quality supports this claim. If Paul Dawkins' relaxed, bluesy vocals don't win you over, the Duran Duran-like sound of Black Steel's guitar will. From a cultural standpoint, Kofi's "I'm In Love With A Dreadlocks" and "Black Pride" deliver a feeling of upliftment, and Dennis Bovell's rub-a-dub style on "The Man In Me" raises your spirits and keeps your blood flowing. Susan Cadogan's performance had a subtle hipness that was both calming and danceable, and Errol Dunkley's set wrote the manual on cool - his gleeful demeanor punctuated his vocal hits "I'll Be Back" and "OK Fred" with cloud-level heights of happiness. Winston Reedy's classics, such as "Daughter of Zion" and "Dim The Lights," kept the vibes in a state of self-assured bliss, thanks to Reedy's smooth crooning and graceful stage presence. Overall, the concert's vibes are positive, the music is crystal clear, and the vocals have that special, subdued rhythm-and-blues sound that Lovers Rock fans crave. Also includes performances from Sandra Cross, Tradition, Vivian Jones, Caron Wheeler, Sugar Minott, Trevor Walters, Lorna Bennett, Jimmy Lindsey, Vivian Jones, and Jean Adebambo.
