Sean Kingston’s Life

Sean Kingston was born Kisean Jamal Anderson in Miami, Florida on February 3, 1990. He is the grandson of legendary reggae music producer Jack Ruby. He moved to Kingston, Jamaica, the geographic heart of reggae music, when he was 6 years old, where he was raised by his sister and mother. In 2005, when Sean was still in high school, his mother and sister were incarcerated for 1 year and 4 months, respectively.

“When my mother and sister went away, it took a lot out of me,” Kingston explains on his MySpace page. “I thought to myself, ‘This is too much.’ I was only 15. I missed her like crazy.”

These events began a turning point in Sean Kingston’s life and future career as a pop reggae star. First, he moved back to Florida, where he borrowed a friend’s computer and got active on MySpace to stay off the streets and out of trouble. Once online he began developing his own reggae fusion sound and building a network of friends and musical professionals, the most important of whom was superstar music producer J. R. Rotem.

After discovering Rotem’s MySpace page, Kingston began emailing him several times every day, until Rotem finally gave him a break, offering to meet the hopeful teenager in Los Angeles, California, and listen to his music and singing.

This was a lucky break for both Sean Kingston, who was moving to LA to live with his brother, and for Rotem, who was searching for a lead artists for his new Beluga Heights label. When he heard Kingston, Rotem was struck by what he described as Kingston’s “distinct sound” and “limitless potential.”

Rotem quickly signed on as executive producer for Sean Kingston’s debut album, also entitled Sean Kingston, a modern fusion reggae album with featuring the hit single Beautiful Girls. Sean Kingston was released in partnership between Beluga and Epic Records. His sophomore album, Tomorrow, is scheduled for release in late August 2009.

Sean Kingston’s Music

Sean Kingston successfully matches his melodic, crooning voice with well-produced tracks, resulting in songs are notable for 3 reasons:

  1. They are frequently chart-topping hits, thanks to Kingston’s talent and enthusiasm as well as Rotem’s deft production decisions. With only 1 full record released to date, Kingston already has 4 top 10 hits under his belt (Beautiful Girls, Me Love, Take You There, and Fire Burning), a platinum album, and more than 3 million digital singles and 3 million ringtones sold at the time of this writing.
  2. They blend reggae, pop, hip hop, and other musical genres into an addictive sound. Sean Kingston’s international upbringing exposed him to a variety of musical flavors, which he mixes into singles that sound both fresh and classic. Beautiful Girls pulls the bassline and some lyrics from a doo wop hip. Me Love’s melody has its roots in classic rockers Led Zeppelin‘s D’Yer Mak’er. The initial singles from Tomorrow have dancehall and hip hop sounds.
  3. Kingston keeps his lyrics clean. At a time when hip hop and dancehall music – the 2 genres that Kingston bridges – are criticized for violent, denigrating, and sexually explicit lyrics, he writes hopeful, uplifting songs about love and life. Sean Kingston once said “if I can write a great track without using those words, then that’s the style for me.” It’s the style for many other people too: in addition to his own reggae pop albums, Beautiful Girls and Me Love both appeared on the Kidz Bop vol. 13 compilation album. Kingston won a 2007 Teen Choice Award and has toured with kid-friendly pop star Kelly Clarkson.
