We have all been moved by the human catastrophe that has visited the country of Japan in recent weeks. Needless to say, the initial earthquake followed by the threat of deadly radiation have exacted an unbearable and miserable toll on the Japanese people. Even though we are miles away from the epicenter of the Japanese earthquake, and the eminent threat of radiation, the palpable suffering of the Japanese people reverberates world wide. We here at LinkUp Media Group of Companies feel duty-bound to assist the people of Japan. So, we have planned a charitable fund raising concert, dubbed “JAMROCK FOR JAPAN.” This is our way of letting the Japanese people, and by extension the world, know that we stand together in time of distress, and we recognize that there is this common thread of humanity that binds us together as a people, whether we are right here in the United States or as far away as Japan. Let’s come out and support this cause, it is our way helping our fellow human beings who are suffering in Japan.

JAMROCK FOR JAPAN will be held on Monday, April 18th, 2011 at SOBs, located at 204 Varick Street, New York NY.
Doors will open promptly at 7pm.
This charitable event will be hosted by 93.5 FM LinkUp Radio Broadcaster and Publisher of JAMROCK Magazine, David “Squeeze” Annakie.

Mr. Vegas is a well-known humanitarian and one of Reggae’s most influential and talented musician. “Throughout the years, Vegas has continued to release well-crafted singles which has ensured his status as one of the most consistent and in-demand acts in the business.” The singjay has appeared on all of the Reggae industry’s major shows in the Caribbean. “In addition to blasting his way through the Caribbean, Mr. Vegas has also thrilled fans in Europe, the U.S. and Japan with highly rated performances.” Mr. Vegas will perform an array of songs that will keep the crowd begging for more.

We have invited Politicians, Entertainers (Reggae and R&B), Models, Actors, which includes members of the Japanese Community. Music will be provided by LinkUp Radio DJs- Kevin Crown, Fatta Diamond, DJ Wayne, Paul Michael and Dezzie. With 54 UK hit singles and over 70 million albums sold, UB40 are truly kings of modern reggae.

UB40 visited the United States for their 2009 Labour of Love Tour, before returning to Europe and the UK later in the year. UB40′s US tour began on April 10 in Snoqualmie, Washington, and ran until May 8 in Glenside, Pennsylvania, including live reggae shows in 18 cities. Most of the tour venues were on the US West Coast, including shows on April 13 in Portland, Oregon, and on April 21 in Solana Beach, California. The tour also took UB40 up to Canada for a show on April 11 in Coquitlam, British Columbia.

UB40 also headlined South Florida’s SunFest, held from April 29 to May 3, 2009 in downtown West Palm Beach. Other bands in the lineup included Slightly Stoopid, 311, The Steve Miller Band, and others.

The penultimate US tour date was a May 7 show in Times Square, New York City.

They also performed at the Epsom Downs Racecourse on Thursday 30th July, as the grand finale of the 2009 Epsom Live! series of events, which featured a live outdoor concert after the last race.

Nick Blofeld, the Epsom Downs Racecourse’s Managing Director, praised their 2006 show at the same venue: “The atmosphere was fantastic with young and old enjoying UB40 perform their classic hits as the sun set across The Downs after watching some thrilling racing around the unique Derby course.”

The 20 tracks on Love Songs were UB40′s favorite lovers sounds, including the hit singles I Got You Babe and (I Can’t Help) Falling In love With You. The album includes other UB40 favorites such as Please Don’t Make Me Cry, Homely Girl, Breakfast In Bed, and I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight.

UB40 formed in Britain’s West Midlands in 1978, eventually gaining global popularity as one of the world’s foremost reggae bands, delighting existing reggae fans and drawing new listeners to the genre with reggae hits such as (I Can’t Help) Falling in Love With You and Kingston Town. The original reggae band’s line up included Ali Campbell, his brother Robin Campbell, James (Jimmy) Brown, Norman Hassan, Earl Falconer, Brian Travers, Mickey Virtue, and Astro.

UB40 truly took off in the beginning of 1980, when the reggae band was invited to tour with The Pretenders. Drawing on their roots in Jamaican music, UB40 joined the Two Tone sound that had grown from Caribbean ska, rock steady and reggae and was then becoming popular in nearby Coventry, England. UB40 has released dozens of studio and live albums, their most famous song, 1988′s Red Red Wine, the original Labour of Love album, became a global hit, topping the Hot 100 chart.

UB40′s 8-member band lineup has remained active for over 30 years, drawing on their Irish, Scottish, English, Yemeni and Jamaican heritage for a truly global sound. Founder and former lead singer Ali Campbell left UB40 last year, and Mickey Virtue left UB40 shortly thereafter. Fortunately, they managed to finish the Twentyfourseven album (get it here) just in time to keep the original line up. Ali and Mickey Virtue were replaced with Duncan Campbell and Tony Mullings. Other members of the UB40 lineup include drummer James Brown, guitarist/vocalist Robin Campbell, bassist/vocalist Earl Falconer, percussionist/vocalist Norman Hassan, saxophonist Brian Travers, and vocalist/trumpeter Astro.

Despite an earlier press release from the band, indicating that Ali Campbell was leaving to pursue a solo career, the lead singer released a statement indicating that he had “been deeply unhappy with administrative practices and with many decisions that have been made in recent years.” He did soften his tone with closing well-wishes, concluding: “I know UB40 will carry on successfully without me and I wish them all the best.”

UB40′s new lineup released their next studio album Labour of Love IV in 2010. It was originally scheduled to be released in October 2009 but was a bit delayed. The band’s official website reported that it was all “business as usual,” and that “despite rumors to the contrary,” the band is moving forward making new music. Labor of Love IV was their first Labour of Love album since 1998′s Labour of Love III. UB40 began the Labour of Love series in 1983, with a #1 album and the hit single Red, Red Wine. In 1989 the group released Labour of Love II, which spawned a #4 single (Kingston Town) and 2 US billboard top 10 singles. Labour of Love III was released in 1998 and included the hit single Come Back, Darling.

Labor of Love IV continued UB40′s passionate love of reggae classics. Recorded at the band’s Reflex Studios in Birmingham in the spring of 2009, the album includes 16 tracks featuring covers such as Delroy Wilson’s Close to Me, John Holt‘s I Don’t Want to See You Cry and Man Next Door, Smokey Robinson’s Tracks of My Tears, and Sam Cooke’s Bring it on Home to Me. With Ali Campbell absent from the lineup, Labour of Love IV features lead vocals from his brother, Duncan Campbell.

The Labour of Love IV album release was followed by a UK/European arena tour in November and December 2009.

About Signal Path

For almost a decade, Signal Path continues their nearly decade-old mission to expand live electronic music performance. Tens of thousands of fans have downloaded their music and countless artists have been influenced by their forward-looking attitudes. Signal Path has played almost every major US festival and continues to build awareness around the world.

Signal Path’s sound bends musical genres and deep melodic ideas around a core of unrelenting rhythm and massive low-end. They create a depth and intricacy of sound that become more commanding every time it’s heard, and by blending live instrumentation into their production they create a live experience that is as beautiful as it is intense. Born in the unlikely mountain enclave of Missoula, Montana, Signal Path has released 7 albums to date.

The viral success of 2009’s Clash amongst fans was almost beyond belief, and the overwhelming support elevated the band to a level of national prominence they’d never experienced. With packed out concert halls nationwide and an album streamed and downloaded a hundred thousand times, Signal Path suddenly found themselves back at the forefront of a scene they had once helped pioneer.

You can download Clash from Signal Path here, for free.

After the success of Clash and 2 of the most successful national tours in their history, Signal Path permanently relocated to Colorado to complete their next full-length studio album Imaginary Lines.

Signal Path released their Imaginary Lines album in September 2010 as a free download from their website, www.signalpathmusic.com. The release boasted improved production, an immersive musical experience, and catchy rhythms, treating fans to their finest work to date.

I can’t tell, but it seems like the good folks in Black Mountain, NC are hosting a Reggae 5k on Earth Day (the site says “Saturday, April 25″… which isn’t right, one way or another). If it does happen, it’s a great change to celebrate the earth with some sweat and deep roots sound.

Ticket proceeds from this night will be donated to Operation USA’s Haiti relief efforts.

The worldly line-up on what would have been Bob Marley’s 65th birthday includes ska/rocksteady revivalists Hepcat; Cambodian-American indie-rock band Dengue Fever; a very special set by veteran bassist Joey Altruda’s Crucial Riddims & Reggae Greats Revue featuring Wailing Souls, Elan, Eljai and special guests; cumbia band Very Be Careful; all-star reggae group The Lions; experimental rock outfit The Tuffingtons; Echodelic Soundsystem; and DJ Miles Perlich. The evening will be hosted by veteran radio DJ Junor Francis and Alexis de la Rocha of Live Daily.

Doors open at 7pm.

Operation USA is an international relief agency that helps communities at home and abroad overcome the effects of disasters, disease and endemic poverty by providing privately-funded relief, reconstruction and development aid. OpUSA’s slogan is “Give and it gets there”. And it does, with 98% of every dollar donated going to on the ground relief. That’s why The Rockery, organizers of this event, chose OpUSA to receive the funds generated on February 6th.

Here’s the concert lineup:

Hepcat

“Ska”, the effervescent mid-’60s precursor to reggae, was as crucial to Jamaican pop as rockabilly was here in America, and while each endured for only a brief span of years, both of these influential styles constantly reoccur, thanks to cyclical eruptions of well-intentioned but oft-ludicrous revivalists. Ska stewards Hepcat are the noble exception to that rule, a band that has perfected the art of owning the style’s musical bedrock and upholding its traditions with excruciating precision even while informing it with carefully administered jolts of their own creative impulses. That’s a damn nifty trick, and over the course of the past two decades, despite several extended hiatuses, personnel departures, even death, Hepcat has remained an exemplary force, a group whose combination of technique, good taste and genuine sincerity results in music that is not only moving — it also really moves.” (Johnny Whiteside, LA Weekly) www.hepcatlive.com

Joey Altruda’s Crucial Riddims & Reggae Greats Revue

The music of veteran bassist/bandleader Joey Altruda features a variety of musicians depending upon the context – from ska, reggae and Latin to jump blues, lounge and beyond. Joey’s known for his work with Don “Sugarcane” Harris during the ‘80s in the band Tupelo Chain Sex and he co-led Jump With Joey with drummer Willie McNeil from 1989-1999. Over the years Joey has worked with a plethora of legends, including Plas Johnson, Bo Diddley, Joe Strummer, Ernest Ranglin, Jack Costanzo, Ernie Andrews, Rico Rodriguez, Lloyd Knibbs, Mongo Santamaria, Patato Valdez, Chocolate Armenteros and Candido Cameron. With his super group Crucial Riddims, Joey is assembling a Reggae Greats Revue where he will be joined by some of the scenes most talented musicians and singers, paying homage to Jamaican music. Guests will include legendary duo Wailing Souls, long-time Wailers singer Elan, Belizean singer Eljai, Persephone Laird of Ocean 11, and more singers to be announced. www.myspace.com/joeyaltrudamusic

The Lions

The Lions are Los Angeles’ premier 12-piece all-star reggae band featuring members of Hepcat, Orgone, Breakestra, Macy Gray’s band, The Expanders, Ocean 11, Connie Price & the Keystones and Rhythm Roots Allstars. The result of an impromptu recording session by some of the scene’s most soulful and notable musicians and singers, The Lions created grooves that went beyond Jamaican music by combining new and traditional rhythms, and dub mixing mastery with the global sounds of Ethiopia and Colombia. Their album Jungle Struttin’ was released on Ubiquity Records in 2008 and they are now releasing songs on their own Lions Bread Records – including the singer/DJ combination “This Generation” and the laid back instrumental “New Girl”. Their live set transcends any particular genre but is best described as a healthy mix of vocal and dub tracks, balancing classic reggae and soul cuts as well as new originals. The Lions have had the honor of being the backing band on two occasions for legends The Heptones, and have supported The Aggrolites, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Antibalas and Bedouin Soundclash. www.myspace.com/lionsbread

The Tuffingtons

The Tuffingtons are a six-piece unit made up of native Angelenos, who have created their own blend of ska and disco, with a couple nods to bands like Television, Madness and Buzzcocks. They have called their music everything from AM punk to island-arena rock. The Tuffingtons are gaining a reputation for their live shows, which usually consist of something like animal ‘sacrifice’, and there is a very lifelike and life-size puppet. Their shows are better experienced than explained. Their debut full-length record, produced by Jacob Bercovici AKA Mr. Sandwiches (Warpaint, The Lady Tigra) will be out this summer. Their current EP Egregious will be released this February. www.myspace.com/thosewildtuffingtons

Dengue Fever

Dengue Fever’s psychedelic take on the Cambodian pop sounds of the 60s makes them one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most unique success stories. They draw enthusiastic crowds from LA to the UK, from Maui to Moscow, and leave critics rummaging through their thesauruses looking for new superlatives to describe their sound. Dengue Fever is Chhom Nimol – who sang regularly for the King and Queen of Cambodia – Ethan Holtzman (keyboards), Zac Holtzman (guitar), David Ralicke (horns), Senon Williams (bass) and Paul Smith (drums). The band’s music has been featured in a number of film and television shows including City of Ghosts, Must Love Dogs, Broken Flowers, HBO’s hit series True Blood and twice on Showtime’s Weeds. They have released three albums, Dengue Fever, Escape From Dragon House, Venus On Earth and released their DVD/CD soundtrack to the documentary Sleepwalking Through The Mekong on April 14, 2009. They recently released Dengue Fever Presents: Electric Cambodia, a compilation of lost Cambodian classics from the 1960’s and 1970’s. www.myspace.com/denguefevermusic

Very Be Careful

Very Be Careful is a homegrown L.A. band that plays Colombian vallenato music, a traditional cumbia sound that centers around the accordion, backed with percussion and bass. Members include Ricardo “Ricky G” Guzman on accordion and vocals, Arturo “Brickems” Guzman on bass, Craig “Peabody” Martin on guacharaca, Dante “The Rip” Ruiz on campana, and Richard “Mil Caras” Panta on caja vallenata. From the streets of Austin’s SXSW and Germany’s World Cup Tour ’06 to the cultural pinnacles of Chicago’s Summer Dance Series, New York’s Central Park Summerstage, Los Angeles’ Grand Performances, Glastonbury Music Festival, and Fuji Rock Festival, to NY’s SOBs, LA’s House of Blues and backyard BBQs, VBC has tamed the beasts within or unleashed the ones without. They have performed alongside Joe Strummer, Alfredo Gutierrez, Antibalas, Carlos Vives, Dub Trio, Grupo Niche, Kronos Quartet, Gogol Bordello. VBC’s latest album, Horrible Club (Downtown Pijao 2009), is a collection of bootleg recordings from 1998-2009 and captures the reckless abandon of a VBC show where anything can happen. www.verybecareful.com

Tickets are $25 and will be available starting Saturday, January 23rd at 10am at www.Ticketmaster.com, 1-800-745-3000, select Macy’s, all Ritmo Latino stores, and the El Rey’s restaurant Cowboys & Turbans. Cowboys & Turbans is open Monday thru Friday from Noon to 9pm and on show nights (cash only). If tickets remain, walk up sales will be available at the El Rey box office, opening at the door time on the night of the event. El Rey Theatre is located at 5515 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90036. It’s an all ages, general admission, standing room only venue.

Smile Jamaica spokesperson Norman Bryan, said yesterday that while the organization was looking forward to staging the concert after “there are some extenuating circumstances that just cannot be ignored, and there’s no way we could proceed with the concert bearing them in mind.”

He added that the Marley family will still be celebrating Bob’s birthday and honoring his legacy in private.

Bryan also said that the Ghetto Youth’s International would be redoubling its efforts to make a 2011 staging possible.

“Ghetto Youths International will continue spreading the message of the Hon. Robert Nesta Marley, and we will be definitely putting our heads together to make 2011 the year Smile Jamaica returns from its hiatus.”

Smile Jamaica saw its historic birth in December of 1976, when it was held at the National Heroes Park in Kingston. The event took place a mere two days after gunmen almost ended Bob Marley’s life, and he was recuperating in the Blue Mountains. It was there that Marley magic reigned supreme yet again, as an injured Bob agreed to perform one song for the 80,000-strong throng of patrons. That one song turned into a magical 90 minute performance with Bob Marley and the Wailers.

Uganda’s Monitor reports that “The King of Dancehall stuck a sword of words into gay people through singing and talking,” quoting the performer as stating “in my family, we don’t have any gay person but if you’re gay, my brother that’s not my fault.” The statement was made while Beenie Man performed Mi Nah Wallah, a dancehall song that advocates cutting gay men’s throats.

Beenie Man‘s performance led to protests from gay rights activists who were outraged at his words. The event was particularly embarrassing for concert sponsor and food and beverage giant PepsiCo given the corporation’s support of the LGBT community in the past. Officials from PepsiCo responded by denouncing the artiste. This latest turn in Beenie Man‘s gay bashing saga may have negative implications for other artists, as PepsiCo officials have promised to be more careful when choosing events and artists to sponsor in the future.

Change.org reports that PepsiCo responded to an email campaign protesting the concert by sending an email stating that:

We are appalled by the performer’s lyrics and find them repugnant. Our bottling partner in Uganda was not aware of the performer’s views and never would have sponsored the concert with this knowledge. Moving forward, we will work closely with our bottling partners to be more vigilant about the events associated with our brands.

The King of the Dancehall‘s woes continue after Beenie Man was removed from New Zealand’s Big Day Out festival lineup by the event planners last month. Despite these recent events, Beenie Man is the third most popular dancehall artist amongst young Jamaicans, following only Mavado and Vybz Kartel.
