Top Caribbean entertainers named for IRAWMA weekend in Trinidad and Tobago

As plans unfold for the staging of the 30th anniversary of the International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA) in Trinidad and Tobago anticipation is at an all time high. Music fans and industry insiders are eagerly awaiting the host of performances for the renowned awards show as well as the major concert event “Reggae meets Soca/Chutney”.

2011 International Reggae and World Music Awards performances

The prestigious IRAWMA ceremony which will be held at the National Academy for Performing Arts on Saturday May 28th will offer the very best in regional talent such as Trinidad & Tobago’s own Machel Montano (pictured here, performing at a past IRAWMA celebration), She’s Royal singer Taurus Riley, and Jamaican music legends Freddie McGregor and Dean Fraser. Patrons can also look forward to dynamic performances by dancehall divas Macka Diamond and Tifa, Denise ‘Saucy Wow’ Belfon, Queen Ifrica and St. Maarten’s leading pannist and calypsonian The Mighty Dow. Reggae icons Shaggy and Tony Rebel will serve as MCs for this fun-filled evening.

Shaggy (pictured at right) will work double duty during this upcoming weekend as he will transition from the role of host to performer at the Sunday 29th May event “Reggae meets Soca/Chutney” at the Queen’s Park Savannah. At this concert spectacular Shaggy will display his Grammy Award winning talent alongside longtime cohort Rayvon and will share the stage with the cream of the Caribbean music crop including the ‘King of the Dancehall’ Beenie Man (pictured below), reggae crooner Jah Cure, Gramps Morgan (of Morgan Heritage fame), The Roy Cape All Stars with Blaxx and several chutney and soca artistes.

Attendees of these events can expect 2 world class productions complete with multi-genre all star casts and memorable surprises. As the IRAWMA weekend approaches more artistes will be announced.

We have all been moved by the human catastrophe that has visited the country of Japan in recent weeks. Needless to say, the initial earthquake followed by the threat of deadly radiation have exacted an unbearable and miserable toll on the Japanese people. Even though we are miles away from the epicenter of the Japanese earthquake, and the eminent threat of radiation, the palpable suffering of the Japanese people reverberates world wide. We here at LinkUp Media Group of Companies feel duty-bound to assist the people of Japan. So, we have planned a charitable fund raising concert, dubbed “JAMROCK FOR JAPAN.” This is our way of letting the Japanese people, and by extension the world, know that we stand together in time of distress, and we recognize that there is this common thread of humanity that binds us together as a people, whether we are right here in the United States or as far away as Japan. Let’s come out and support this cause, it is our way helping our fellow human beings who are suffering in Japan.

Mr. Vegas is a well-known humanitarian and one of Reggae’s most influential and talented musician. “Throughout the years, Vegas has continued to release well-crafted singles which has ensured his status as one of the most consistent and in-demand acts in the business.” The singjay has appeared on all of the Reggae industry’s major shows in the Caribbean. “In addition to blasting his way through the Caribbean, Mr. Vegas has also thrilled fans in Europe, the U.S. and Japan with highly rated performances.” Mr. Vegas will perform an array of songs that will keep the crowd begging for more.

Love Your Mother Earth Festival 2011

This summer, on June 16th through the 18th, 2011, the Love Your Mother Earth (LYME) festival will be held at Ryan Creek Meadows in Montana, USA.

Early bird tickets are selling for $25 each for the first 200 tickets sold. You can get them at the official LYME website (see the URL below).

The LYME Festival 2011 will include 3 performance stages as well as a geodesic dome featuring electronica music. Artists will perform in musical genres including reggae, rock, bluegrass, and ska music.

Barrington Levy to star in Gangstas movie from Jamaica

We’ve just received word that dancehall star Vybz Kartel and reggae singer Barrington Levy are going to star in Gangstas, a new feature film that’s being shot in Jamaica.

The action flick is heavily rooted in Barrington Levy’s Gangsters soundtrack, which includes performances by Vybz Kartel and DJ Khago. The movie aspires to show the gritty reality of Jamaican inner city criminals via the arc of one character’s immigration to Philadelphia. Barrington Levy will lead as a Philadelphia criminal kingpin, alongside costar Paul Campbell (who fans will recognize from Shottas and First Sunday) as a cold-blooded Jamaican assassin who travels to the States to take out the competition. The story reaches a fever pitch as Campbell’s character targets rival gangsters, drug dealers, and other criminals.

Gangstas is being produced by Platinum Camp, in association with Black Roses Entertainment and Augustus Films. Wyclef Jean and Twin of Twins are also named as leading the project. The film’s creators promise a uniquely Caribbean flavor by injecting the action thriller with “a dose of voodoo and a hint of comedy.”

Shooting for Gangstas is scheduled to begin in April 2011.

Pop singer Bruno Mars has followed his recent pop music Grammy award win with a new music video featuring reggae music artiste Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley.

The song, Liquor Store Blues is from Bruno Mars’ debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans. I have no idea how Damian Marley fits into the picture, except thematically (and the fact that Damian is doing a log of guest appearances).

Here’s the video for you:

Sadly, it’s not a great video, but still great to see Marley doing a crossover into the pop world. The smoke theme is nice but there isn’t a whole lot more to offer. It’s tuff when reggae is only popular in this lightweight context.

The Upsetter – Lee “Scratch” Perry documentary movie

There’s a new reggae artist biopic coming to the big screen: The Upsetter: The Life and Music of Lee Scratch Perry. The reggae music documentary details the life and times of Lee “Scratch” Perry, arguably one of the world’s greatest dub reggae music producers. It was created by Ethan Higbee and Adam Bhala Lough, and features narration by Benicio Del Toro.

Created over the course of 7 years, The Upsetter tells the tale of Lee Perry’s life, through 70 years of ups and downs, in Scratch’s own voice. The movie is the compilation of exclusive interviews that the reggae artist provided to American filmmakers Adam Bhala Lough and Ethan Higbee in 2006 (when Perry was living in Switzerland). The documentart film mingles the story of Perry’s creative life with 30 years of Jamaican music, including dub, reggae, and Rastafarian culture. It includes music tracks and archival footage selected from every stage of Lee Perry’s life.

The movie includes an hour and a half of exclusive interviews, rare studio recordings, and live shows. Now 74 and still recording music and touring, Perry will be known for his Black Ark studio, for pioneering so many aspects of dub music, and for his eclectic creativity.

One Love Festival reunion party

We’ve recently received a preview announcement of the upcoming reunion party for the One Love Festival – the United Kingdom’s #1 Reggae and Dub music festival – on March 19 at the Regal Theatre in Oxford, England. Limited early bird tickets are on sale.

This year’s One Love Festival reunion party is at the Regal Theatre in Oxford Saturday 19th March, 2011. The reunion is a chance for One Love Festival customers old and new to get together before the main summer festival event and skank the winter away. This year its going to be at a 1200 capacity Theatre. Where some of the very best UK Reggae and Dub artists are being showcased – The line up is rammed full of One Love Festival favorites with headline names each appearing after each other until 4am in morning over two bass thumping rooms.

Big Boss
Big Boss is a roots reggae band consisting of Mark Dillon on Keyboard and Vocals, Patrick Meyer on Guitar and Vocals, Steve Capecci on bass, and Mike Torres on drums. As one of NYC’s premiere reggae bands, Big Boss keeps a firm grasp on the history of Jamaican music with an ear pressed to the sounds of tomorrow. From 1960′s ska and rocksteady to 80′s rub-a-dub and dancehall, Big Boss is an air-tight four piece that can change styles at a drop, perform live sound clashes that rival any selector, and can construct medleys with transitions so smooth that a half hour melts away in what feels like moments.

Built from the rock-solid rhythm section of Mike Torres on drums and Steve Capecci on bass, Big Boss’s groove is based on a traditional understanding of Jamaican rhythms. As one of NYC’s most in-demand reggae bassists, Steve Capecci provides no-frills pocket playing with a booming tone and a deliberate sense for note placement. Mike Torres combines an awesome physical prowess on the drums and impeccable technique, which made him a natural choice for the house band at the Ari-Up Punky Reggae Party Birthday, a 2011 tribute to the Slits front-woman. Guitarist Patrick Meyer’s chord chops is perfectly interwoven with Capecci and Torres’s groove, and his expert employment of crisp soloing and effects is a key element of Big Boss’s live dub ventures. Mark Dillon completes the lineup, commandeering three keyboards at live performances to ensure a level of sonic versatility and vocabulary that few bands can boast.

Big Boss features a comprehensive musical vocabulary with an exhilarating live show. As a band, Big Boss has had the opportunity to back some of the most prominent and talented reggae singers in NYC. Whether for club dates, recordings, live shows and parties, arranging and composing, or as a support band for artists, Big Boss is the perfect choice for genuine reggae and Jamaican music.

Dubbest

Dubbest is a dub reggae group with a focus on experimental jam sounds. Their lineup includes Ryan Thaxter on Vocals and melodica, Andrew MacKenzie on Guitar, Cory Mahoney on Guitar, Sean Craffey on Bass, and Kyle Hancock on drums. This 5-Piece reggae force from Bridgewater, MA includes members from both LAW ONE and FIRING SQUAD who combined to create an original reggae and dub music sound. Dubbest brings a fresh high energy fusion of roots reggae combined with experimental improvisation and good vibes, creating an original and dank sound.

Citrus Distress
Citrus Distress is a more upbeat fusion of reggae, funk, and rock. Ready to bring the latest party sound, their lineup includes Paul Black on Vocals and Guitar, Kev Chiz on Guitar, Mike Mongelli on bass, and Paul Petsu on drums. Citrus D is currently writing their first album and is looking forward to blaze up the studio to record their music.

Citrus D was officially formed in 2010 in Pompton Lakes, NJ. They play a blend of many genres of music such as Reggae, Rock, Funk, Jazz, Ska, Hip-Hop, Blues, Punk, Progressive and Psychedelic to create a unique sound of their own.

Rock’N Vibes & United Reggae are running a contest until February 26 to allow fans to win 1 of 5 copies of the new Genesis album by Dutch reggae star Maikal X.

One of the most promising young international talents in all of reggae music, Dutch star Maikal X, has just made his first contribution to the betterment of Reggae shelves around the world by dropping what has to be one of the most anticipated debut albums of the year, Genesis. Over the past couple of years or so, and particularly within the last year, Maikal X has established his name as one of the strongest singers in the game and in doing so has made this project a really big deal for fans.

Genesis comes via the same Rock’N Vibes imprint which listeners should know from having previously put Ziggi Recado on the map and if that was any indication, this one should be big. The album features previous grand hits such as Best In You, Warning, and Bear With Me. It also includes combinations alongside other reggae stars, including Luciano, Peetah Morgan, and Hawaiian songstress Irie Love.
